A year in review, looking back at 2016
Some time last year, I came across a valuable picture on social media.
Until then, I had never given a deep thought as to what I wanted for myself each year. With this picture, I got enlightened. I realized the importance of outlining three or four things that I would like to achieve every year.
It is that time of the year again, when we are all forced to look back, and reflect on how the year has been. As usual, for many people, there is the constant battle with …
The ‘new year resolutions’ of eating healthy, drinking lots of water and learning to sleep enough- something that is turning out to be a hard task for me in these days.
So, this year, in a bid to invest in myself, I basically strived to use this picture as my benchmark for 2016.
Here is me looking back at 2016:
√ Learn a Language
I am so happy that in 2016 I learnt Italian. Before re-locating to Italy, I registered in an Italian School here in Rome. You can see it here. Six months and counting, I am happy to have made the decision of getting to learn the language. You should hear me speak now, I am almost a LOCAL 🙂
I have always exercised, at least three times a week. So, when I saw this one, I was like good! I don’t have to worry much about you:-)
⊗ Take a social media class
I failed myslef in this. As you may all be aware, social media is taking over mainstream communication. It is no longer a facet that can be ignored. If your are in communication business, it’s time to think twice and dedicate some resources for your self development. I will definitely like to take a course next year. Do you have any links that you can second for review? Please share.
√ Go to a conference
This is a tick, shouldn’t be a full one though. Unlike the past three years, I only attended one conference this year – as a panellist. A conference organized by Radisson Blu, which awarded Radisson Blu Nairobi for being the best communicator amongst other hotels in their chain. It was such a humbling experience, especially for the working team who had toiled tirelessly to have a succesful launch of the hotel in Nairobi. I love conferences, apart from the power of networking, there is so much intellectual exchange that one can benefit from. I honestly would like to attend more conferences in 2017.
Join an organization
Let’s compare notes after I am done with school in January 🙂 Do you have some ideas to share? Help a sister out 🙂
Be an engaged mentor
This, just like the exercise bit, has always been something that I do when I can. I learn so much from my mentees. I hope that they turn out to be excellent women and men in the society. Excellent, joyfull and happy.
As a woman, I believe in finding a balance between social and professional life. For me, happiness is paramount. A woman/man must learn when to be a CEO, when to be a mother/father, when to be a lady/gentleman, when to find the young girl/boy in her/him, when to be a partner, when to be a daughter/son, when to be a friend, when to be the girl/boy next door. We must all learn that when it is business, it is business, when it is play, it is play. When you learn all these, when you finally find your balance, social and professional happiness comes automatically.
√ Create an ongoing vision wall
I like to call it adulting. I don’t know about you but adulting is one of the most difficult things I find myself doing these days. Thinking and planning for the future is one hell of a task. Creating a vision board of where I would like to be in five to ten years from now at times make me feels like I need to write down a manifesto with clearly outlined timelines. It is very important to have a vision wall. If it turns out to be boring for you, you can borrow a leaf from one of my friends who is making a visual vision wall. She cuts out inspirational photos from magazines- of what she would like to achieve over the years and pastes them on her wall at home. This way, when she wakes up every morning she knows what she needs to work for. You should try it. It eases the pressure of being an adult.
Hire a public speaking coach
I am quite confident when I speak in public. My former boss and friend however, once told me that I have to learn to speak sloooooowly while speaking in public. I apparently turn into a rapper some times:-) You see, you need friends like this. Friends who make you better. With this in mind, in the not so long future, I would like to have somebody who can hold my hand, and with constant practice, I am looking forward to learning public speaking. What about you? How is your public speaking skill? I know somebody very close to me who can literally pee in their pants if given a mic to speak. That aside, what tickles me so much with public speaking is the old men from my village and their love for microphones. If you make the mistake of giving a mic during your function, that is the end of all of you! They speak and speak and speak! Without fear of favour or prejudice! Then if they ever sense that they are not being heard, they start tapping the microphone with their whole palm, not even with the tip of the index finger like you and I would probably do, am telling you, it is either the whole palm or a very loud exhale on the mic! So hilarious!
√ Create a space that inspires you
Oh yaaaaay! Whoop whoop…after years of procrastination, I finally created PeachesonBlue.
Check out here why this space is so important to me 🙂
If it doesn’t involve breaking a bank 🙂 Just name the place and I will be there. I never say NO to Travel. I love travelling! My highlight this year has to be our girls trip to Rwanda! It was a four days trip, which all started as a joke, but before we knew it, we were on a 24 hour road trip from Kenya to Rwanda. It was FANTASTIC! I did some short story telling on my instagram. Check out my handle @carydon_vidah for more travel stories:-)
Looking back at 2016, my score seems quite encouraging. I am not fully satisfied, I believe I could have done better, but as I wrap 2016 and open a new chapter in 2017, I am currently re-drawing and re-modelling my vision wall. My fingers are crossed and I am looking forward to sharing with you as we encourage each other. What aboutchya… how was your 2016?
